Google Business Profile guide for Amritsar businesses

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is arguably the single most important free marketing tool available to any business in Amritsar and Punjab. When someone searches for "restaurant near me" or "dentist in Amritsar" on Google, they see three businesses in a highlighted box at the top of the results. This is the Google Local Pack โ€” and appearing in it can transform your business.

Yet most businesses in Amritsar are either not listed or are listed with incomplete, outdated, or unoptimised profiles. This represents a massive opportunity for the businesses willing to invest just a few hours in doing this right.

What is Google Business Profile and Why Does It Matter?

Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is Google's platform for managing how your business appears on Google Search and Google Maps. A fully optimised GBP listing can:

  • Appear in the Google Local Pack (the top 3 local results) for relevant searches
  • Show your phone number, address, and website directly in search results
  • Display your opening hours, photos, reviews, and latest updates
  • Allow customers to message you, book appointments, or order directly from the listing
  • Appear prominently on Google Maps when users search for nearby businesses

Studies consistently show that businesses in the Google Local Pack receive approximately 44% of all clicks for local search queries. Being outside the Local Pack essentially means being invisible to nearly half your potential local audience.

Step 1: Claim and Verify Your Profile

If you have not already, visit business.google.com and claim your business listing. If your business already has an existing listing created by Google or a previous owner, claim it rather than creating a duplicate. Verification is typically done by postcard (a physical card sent to your business address with a verification code), by phone, or increasingly through video verification. Complete verification immediately โ€” unverified profiles have very limited visibility.

Step 2: Complete Every Section of Your Profile

Google rewards completeness. A fully completed profile ranks significantly higher than a partially completed one. Here is every section you need to fill in:

  • Business name: Use your exact legal business name โ€” no keyword stuffing (this violates Google's guidelines and can get your profile suspended)
  • Primary category: Choose the most specific category that accurately describes your business. This is the single most important ranking factor on GBP.
  • Secondary categories: Add every additional category that applies. A hotel might add "Restaurant" and "Spa" as secondary categories.
  • Business description: Write a 750-character description that naturally includes your location, your key services, and what makes you unique. Avoid keyword stuffing but do mention "Amritsar," your main service types, and nearby landmarks.
  • Address and service area: Add your exact address. If you also serve customers at their location (e.g., a plumber or caterer), add a service area.
  • Phone number: Add a local number โ€” a landline with an Amritsar area code builds more trust than a mobile number alone.
  • Website: Link to your website's homepage, or better yet, to a location-specific landing page if you have multiple branches.
  • Opening hours: Keep these meticulously up to date, including special hours for public holidays. Incorrect hours are one of the biggest causes of negative reviews.
  • Attributes: These are the small details like "Free WiFi," "Parking Available," "Women-led," "Accepts Card Payments." Fill in every attribute that applies.

Step 3: Build Your Photo Gallery

Businesses with 100+ photos receive significantly more direction requests and website clicks than those with fewer than 10 photos. Here is a framework for building your photo library:

  • Cover photo: The most important image โ€” choose something that represents your business at its best. For a restaurant, this is your signature dish or your dining room at full capacity.
  • Logo: Clear, high-resolution, on white background if possible.
  • Interior photos: Multiple angles showing your space at its best.
  • Exterior photos: Including signage, entrance, and parking area โ€” this helps customers identify you when they arrive.
  • Product/service photos: Your menu items, products, treatments, or results.
  • Team photos: Photos of your staff โ€” this humanises your business and builds trust.
  • At-work photos: Show your business in action โ€” a busy kitchen, a consultation, a product being made.

Upload new photos regularly. Google's algorithm favours profiles that are actively managed. Aim to add at least 4-5 new photos every month.

Step 4: Generate and Respond to Reviews

Reviews are both a ranking factor for Google and a conversion factor for potential customers. A business with 50 five-star reviews will almost always outperform a competitor with 5 reviews, even if the competitor's profile is otherwise identical.

The best way to generate reviews is to ask for them โ€” simply, directly, and consistently. After every positive customer interaction, say: "Would you mind leaving us a Google review? It really helps our small business." Then send them a direct link to your review page. You can find this link in your GBP dashboard under "Get more reviews."

Respond to every review โ€” positive and negative. A prompt, professional response to a negative review demonstrates maturity and customer care, and often converts the reviewer into a loyal customer. Never argue with or dismiss negative reviews publicly.

Step 5: Post Regular Updates

Google Posts โ€” short updates that appear on your GBP listing โ€” are one of the most underutilised features available. You can post about events, offers, new products, news, and more. Posts appear directly in search results when someone finds your listing. Aim to post at least once per week. Topics for your posts might include:

  • Weekly specials or offers
  • New menu items or products
  • Upcoming events
  • Business news (new branch, award, certification)
  • Seasonal promotions (Diwali offers, summer specials)

Step 6: Use Q&A to Pre-empt Common Questions

The Questions & Answers section of GBP allows anyone to ask โ€” and answer โ€” questions about your business. Proactively add the most common questions you receive and answer them yourself. This saves your staff time and helps potential customers get the information they need to choose you.

Monitoring Your GBP Performance

Google provides detailed analytics within your GBP dashboard showing how many people found your listing, how they found it (direct search vs discovery), what actions they took (website clicks, direction requests, calls), and which photos are performing best. Review these analytics monthly and use the insights to refine your strategy.
